Management Discussion
  • Net premiums earned for the Group increased 18 percent, driven by growth from our casualty and property segments. Overall market declines resulted in $128.8 million of unrealized losses on equity securities in the first six months of 2022, while positive market performance resulted in $32.1 million of unrealized gains in our equity portfolio in 2021. Investment income was up 10 percent, due to an increased average asset base relative to the prior year. Realized gains during the first six months of 2022 were comprised of $19.2 million of realized gains on equity securities, primarily due to rebalancing within our equity strategies, $0.8 million of realized losses on the fixed income portfolio and less than $0.1 million of other realized loss. This compares to $48.9 million of realized gains on the equity portfolio, $1.5 million of realized gains on the fixed income portfolio and $0.2 million of other realized gains for the same period in 2021.
